April 2019 Meeting Recap/Summary

Hello everyone, here's your summary of what happened at this month’s meeting for everyone who wasn’t able to attend (and to jog memories for those who did).

First up, for the May meeting: We discussed having a stash tailgate sale from our trunks in the parking lot at this coming meeting (May 1) at 6:30 (provided the weather is good and enough people are interested in participating). The idea is to do something similar to what the Victoria MQG does once a year: you bag up unwanted stash items (can be anything from mixed scraps to fat quarters or even small yardage) and you put a price on the bag. Other members can then shop (bring small bills and change) from what you’ve got.

FYI: at the last Victoria MQG sale, bags ranged from small Ziplocs with a fat quarter or two to extra-large freezer bags stuffed with fabric and bag prices ranged anywhere from 50 cents to 10 bucks, but of course you can charge what you like.

Please email us by Sunday to confirm if you’re going to have stash for sale - if we don’t have enough people participating, we’ll just do a normal meeting and maybe do another round of designing donation quilts from the newest batches of HSTs that have come in.

Right now the forecast is for sunny weather that day, but forecasts aren't an exact science this far out, lol... if it ends up raining that day, we'll do the sale at the June meeting instead (again, assuming there are several people with stash to sell).

News/etc. from the meeting:

  • There were 7 of us who made it to the Jonanco sew-in for the donation quilts. We got 5 done there and our total is up to 20 finished quilts now. Great job, everyone, and keep ‘em coming!
  • Two of our members talked about their new studio, Sew It Begins. The shop is on Nicol Street in the same building as Iron Oxide Art Supplies and they’re generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 to 5, so pop in and say hi if you’re in the area. Classes will be starting soon.
  • Someone mentioned that VIU will be doing a textile arts summer workshop; I haven’t been able to find details about it on their website, though. If anyone has that info, please email us and we'll forward it to everyone.
  • We toured through the Modern Quilt Guild’s website at https://www.themodernquiltguild.com, technical glitches and all… but hey, there’s tons of great materials and resources on there, just be wary of it logging you out right before you want to watch something on there.
  • And of course there was show & share:

NEXT SEW-IN: Saturday May 25th from 10-4 at the Nanaimo North library on Hammond Bay Road, please email us to sign up for it by the Thursday beforehand. If we don’t have enough people signed up, we will have to cancel it.

Donation quilt HSTs general info: As we discussed in previous meetings, we have an ongoing project to make half square triangles for quilts to be donated to kids in foster care.

If you missed the specs on the HSTs: we’re going for a scrappy sort of look, but big and modern. Half square triangle blocks should be trimmed to 8.5 inches, with one side lighter and the other darker (relative is OK, like pink against white), and we also discussed having one side be a solid (or a subtle print that reads as a solid) and the other a print. The target age is the slightly older kids and teens, say 6-16, as there tends to already be a lot of donations aimed at the really little kids. Final quilt sizes will likely be lap size or twins, but for now, just keep feeding us HSTs and we’ll build the quilts later on. As this is an ongoing project, just make ‘em as you can and bring ‘em – great way to work through your stash.
